Common VoIP Terms and Abbreviations

Voip Terms and AbbreviationsWhen reading about VoIP products and services, you are likely to come across a lot of abbreviations and jargon that you have never heard before. This is a list of common terms you may see both on our site and other articles. These definitions will help guide you as you determine the best VoIP options for your needs.

  • Private branch exchange (PBX) – A telephone exchange intended to serve a business or office. Many larger businesses choose a PBX to circumvent the problems associated with telephone exchanges intended for use by the general public. A PBX may also be known as a private automatic branch exchange (PABX) or an electronic private automatic branch exchange (EPABX)
  • Session initiation protocol (SiP) – A protocol used to establish and disconnect electronic communication sessions via the Internet. Common uses for the protocol include voice calls, video calls, instant messaging, Internet gaming, streaming content, conferencing and more.
  • Voice over broadband (VoBB) – The term voice over broadband is essentially interchangeable with voice over internet protocol. The only discernable difference is that VoBB refers specifically to calls placed over a broadband connection. However, due to that fact that most internet telephony is done via broadband, this term is being phased out.
  • Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) – An umbrella category of communication technologies that deliver voice communication over the Internet. There are some VoIP services that are very similar to standard telephone services, and others that  are reminiscent of instant messaging services like AIM and Yahoo! Messenger.
  • Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) – An XML protocol used to create near-real-time online communication experiences. XMPP has been used to create instant messaging systems and “buddy lists.” XMPP is used in popular chat clients like Google Talk and Gizmo5.

Check back often, as we will be adding to this list on a regular basis. If you have any questions regarding Voice over Internet Protocol services, please contact Chicago Business VoIP’s helpful and knowledgeable staff.
